From the time I was in second grade, I knew I wanted to be a lawyer. What I didn’t know yet was the kind of lawyer I’d become — or that the most important thing I’d ever learn had nothing to do with law school.
After graduating with honors from SUNY Albany and earning my law degree from Hofstra, I immersed myself in New York real estate and never looked back. Over 30 years and thousands of closings — from first-time buyers in Brooklyn to complex multi-million dollar transactions in Manhattan, the Hamptons, and the Gold Coast — I’ve learned something that most people in this industry quietly ignore: the details matter enormously, and almost nobody is paying close enough attention to them.
Most buyers, sellers, and lenders have come to see their real estate attorney as a commodity — a necessary evil, a line item in the closing costs. And that’s fine, until it isn’t. Until a contract needs to be negotiated with precision and real advocacy. Until an old open mortgage surfaces and threatens to derail everything. Until a closing needs to happen simultaneously across multiple locations and someone needs to make the impossible feel routine. That’s where we live. That’s what we love.
But expertise alone was never enough for me. The other half of this work — the half most attorneys never focus on — is the human side. Maya Angelou said it better than I ever could: people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel. I built my entire firm around that truth.
The buyer who can’t sleep because they’re terrified something will go wrong. The seller letting go of a home filled with decades of memories. The lender who simply needs to know their closing will happen on time, every time, no matter what. These are people at moments that matter profoundly — and they deserve an attorney who understands that.
That understanding gave birth to the philosophy that drives everything we do: Service Beyond All Reasonable Expectations. Not as a tagline. As a promise we earn every day, across every interaction, with every member of our team. My people don’t follow this philosophy because I ask them to. They believe in it. And at the end of a closing, when a relieved, excited — or sometimes tearful — client wraps you in a genuine hug, you understand exactly why.
Our 130+ five-star reviews don’t talk about legal expertise. They talk about how people felt working with us. That’s the part I’m most proud of.
Today, as founding partner of Skolnick & Ben-Ezra, PLLC, I lead a team of attorneys and professionals who bring that same commitment to every transaction — precision, follow-through, and the deep understanding that we are never just processing a closing. We are stewarding one of the most significant moments in a person’s life.
Outside the office, you’ll find me racing cars — and yes, the parallels are real. High stakes, intense focus, no room for error, and an absolute love of the challenge.
